Hardwired 04:23
Now you tell me that you shouldn't have to get Another person to give you a permanent realignment But knowing you I find that just a little difficult to believe When everything about you says come inside I want you to know me this way Leave me standing on the shoreline Of the river called Monongahela Baby I could draw you all the maps Put an 'x' down on the parts there that will nail you Give a complete cartography of collapse And write a list of all ones down that will fail you There're so many names and so little room I want you to know me this way Leave standing on the shoreline of the river called Monongahela So tell me how the fuck does what I have to say to you Get twisted into all this other bullshit I think I keep well out of the way I don't want to be around when the bills hit To change you should One day you'll be hardwired through for good Uhuh

They keep looking in the basement Like it's the only place I've got to hide my bones Put both feet down on the pavement It's a long walk home I've been down in harpoon alley Since a minister discovered me this way It's been getting a little better I get lights for days So don't come looking for No Exit 'Cause it don't get any easier than this In a matter of an instant You turn all my animosity to bliss

Cain 04:07
In an Hellenesphere of pain Welcome to the multitude This possessed This dispossessed This tryptomiocene Cain Cain Cain Cain You fit your aptitude To the reaction You buy security and truth With satisfaction Cain Cain Cain Cain You crash, burn, bleed out, bitch, bemoan You had it coming That's not your brother's, it's your own Blood you've got running Cain Cain Cain Cain

about

I wrote these songs during the summer and fall of 1994 while living in Pittsburgh, assembling demos of the songs on a drum machine and 4-track at Charlie's place in Lancaster over the course of several months. Sometime in the spring of '95, I sent off cassettes of the demos to the Wikes in hopes of convening to record them.

In early July of '95, during a brief window in Mark's touring schedule with the Bogmen, he, Dave, Charlie, and I met at Toad Hall in Berwyn to sift through the material and work up versions to record. The following day we tracked 5 songs (these and one other) at Soundcage in Lancaster with Jan at the helm. It was a musical reunion of sorts: for Charlie, Dave, and I, the first since our time together in Parrish Blue, August '87, and almost 5 years to the day since I'd last played with Dave in Sam Bisbee's band in NY.

Charlie and I took the ADATs from the Soundcage sessions to Steve Ward's studio that fall to complete most of the overdubs and run lay-back mixes before I moved to California, after which time the work sat unreleased. Some additional tracking occurred as I was pulling the tunes together this year; I brought Hardwired along to the Chemistry sessions with Melvin for some B3, and Bryce kindly contributed some keys and lead guitar to round out the pieces at the last minute.

I have fond memories of these sessions and enormous gratitude for the musicians who helped shape these songs, taking them places I could not have envisioned. You are like brothers to me. It took long enough, but I hope in their final form these tracks do you proud.
